THE LEGACY OF CHESS AT MARYHILL
Maryhill Museum of Art’s permanent exhibition of international chess sets is a perennial favorite among museum visitors. A 1957 exhibit curated by the museum’s director at the time, Clifford Dolph, led to the creation of this permanent exhibition, which today includes about 75 sets representing the many countries, cultures and periods in which chess has been played. These sculptures in miniature present a fascinating intersection of art and chess, and are beloved by visitors of all ages.
In 2014, young artists (K-12), either working in teams or as individuals, were invited to create chess sets of their own design for display at Maryhill in the M.J. Murdock Charitable Trust Education Center. The resulting exhibition, Cardboard, Clay and Crayons: Chess Sets by Young Northwest Artists, is on view now throughJuly 31, 2014. Generous support for Cardboard, Crayons and Clay is provided by the Charlotte Y. Martin Foundation.

ABOUT MARYHILL MUSEUM OF ART:
Housed in a glorious Beaux Arts mansion on 5,300 acres high above the Columbia River, Maryhill Museum of Art opened to the public May 13, 1940 and today remains one of the Pacific Northwest’s most enchanting cultural destinations. The museum was founded by Northwest entrepreneur and visionary Sam Hill, who purchased the property and began building the house with dreams of establishing a Quaker farming community.

When that goal proved untenable, Hill was encouraged by friends Loie Fuller, Queen Marie of Romania, and Alma de Bretteville Spreckles to establish a museum.

Maryhill Museum of Art boasts a world-class permanent collection, rotating exhibitions of the highest caliber, and dynamic educational programs that provide opportunities for further exploration by visitors of all ages.

On view are more than 80 works by Auguste Rodin, European and American paintings, objects d’art from the palaces of the Queen of Romania, Orthodox icons, unique chess sets, and the renowned Théâtre de la Mode, featuring small-scale mannequins attired in designer fashions of post-World War II France. Baskets of the indigenous people of North America were a collecting interest of Hill; today the museum’s American Indian collection represents nearly every tradition and style in North America, with works of art from prehistoric through contemporary.

Maryhill’s William and Catherine Dickson Sculpture Park features more than a dozen large-scale works by Northwest artists. The Maryhill Overlook is a site-specific sculpture by noted Portland architect Brad Cloepfil; nearby are Lewis and Clark interpretive panels. Four miles east of Maryhill is a life-sized replica of Stonehenge, Stonehenge Memorial, which Sam Hill built to memorialize local men who perished in World War I. Nearby, the Klickitat County War Memorial honors those who have died in the service of their country since World War I.The museum was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974. In 2001 the museum was listed as an official site of the National Historic Lewis and Clark Trail and in 2002 was accredited by the American Association of Museums. In 2012 the museum opened the Mary and Bruce Stevenson Wing, a 25,500 square foot expansion that is the first in the museum’s history. The new wing boasts the M.J. Murdock Charitable Trust Education Center, a collections storage and research suite, a new cafe and terrace, and the Cannon Power Plaza with an installation of sculpture, and sweeping views of the Columbia River Gorge and Mount Hood in the distance.

VISITOR INFORMATION:
Maryhill Museum of Art is open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., March 15 to November 15. Admission is $9 for adults, $8 for seniors, $3 for youth age 7-18 and free for children 6 and under. Admission to the Stonehenge Memorial is free; it is open from 7:00 a.m. to dusk daily.Sandwiches, salads, espresso drinks, cold beverages, and freshly baked desserts and pastries, as well as a selection of local wines are available at the museum’s cafe, Loie’s, from 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. daily; the Museum Store features art and history books, jewelry, Native American crafts and other mementos.

IM Michael Wiedenkeller wins Small Nations Individual Chess Championship, World Cup Entry

Hello chess friends, the Small Nations Individual Chess Championship concluded recently in Cyprus with IM Michael Wiedenkeller from Luxembourg not only winning the title, but also earning a seat in the World Chess Cup.

Wiedenkeller had to win the last round to win the title with at least three players tied while going into the last round. Igor Efimov was one of them who even beat Tito Kahn to keep his winning streak going. However, Efimov had lost the direct encounter with Wiedenkeller so he lost the title on tiebreak. Oscar De la Riva, who had led for most of the tournament was third.

The event was organized by FIDE, the Cyprus Chess Federation (KYSO) and the European Chess Union, with sponsorship from the Larnaka Tourism Board and the Municipality of Larnaka, and took place at the Larnaka Museum Historical Archives from April 22nd to April 30th. Full coverage of the event can be found at the official website, http://larnaca2014.fide.com, with results, standings, news and photo galleries.

No Logo Norway Chess 2014: Grischuk's time-trouble blunder gives Caruana Round 1 lead

Hello chess friends, the No Logo Norway Chess SuperTournament has begun and we're all hooked. After World Chess Champion Magnus Carlsen ran away with the pairings blitz on the opening ceremony, the first round witnessed just one decisive game. This was Fabiano Caruana winning as Alexander Grischuk stumbled in time trouble and blundered.

Grischuk's time-trouble blunder gives Caruana Round 1 lead. Photo: Official website

The other games were excellent draws with Levon Aronian versus Simen Agdestein being the most talked about: Agdestein was unwell, but chose to go ahead with the tournament and held his own against the World No. 2 with an excellent exchange sacrifice.

World Chess Champion Magnus Carlsen tried and tried against the young talent Anish Giri, but as he himself remarked later, you cannot win when the opponent is playing extremely accurately! Carlsen's exchange sacrifice was very much of no value in the face of accurate play.

The all-Russian clash of Peter Svidler and Vladimir Kramnik too petered to a draw after simplifications in an English that Svidler thought he could have surprised Kramnik with. However, the former World Chess Champion blitzed away merrily and held on. The Sergey Karjakin - Veselin Topalov game witnessed each trying to test the other's strength, but ended in a logical draw.

You can read a HUGE report on the official website with excellent photographs. Stay tuned, we're not going anywhere... and neither should you from the Norway Chess Tournament. Lots to come!

Chess Obituary: Dragoljub Velimirovic (1942 - 2014)

Chess Obituary: Dragoljub Velimirovic (1942 - 2014)

Coming from a chess family, his mother Jovanka was a master, he was born in Valjevo (Serbia) and very soon become one of the leading Yugoslav juniors and later for long period one of the best grandmasters. Three times he won the Yugoslav Chess Championship, for two decades he was member of the national team. In his rich collection there are two Olympic medals (in Nice 1974 for individual and team performance) another silver from the World Team Championship (Lucerne 1989) and three individual and two team medals from the European Team Championships. In the theory of chess openings there is a sharp variation of the Sicilian Defence named as the Velimirovic attack. His style of play was attacking, always with sacrificial possibilities. Several of his games will always be collected in chess anthologies of great games.

FIDE awarded him the GM title in 1973 and his peak rating was 2575 ( 1986). In the Merano World Championship Match between Karpov and Korchnoi, he was member of Korchnoi’s team. (via FIDE)

No Logo Norway Chess 2014 Round 2: Caruana Leads with Perfect Score

$

Hello chess friends, chess fireworks have begun in Norway with three decisive games in Round 2 at the exciting No Logo Norway Chess currently on in Stavanger. Fabiano Caruana leads with a perfect score after Round 2. Aronian has 1.5. Carlsen, Kramnik, Giri, Agdestein, Grischuk are all at 1 point. Svidler, Karjakin and Topalov have 0.5.

The top game of the day ended in draw: Kramnik vs Carlsen. Photo: Official Website

Vladimir Kramnik-Magnus Carlsen put up a chess display, but the perfect play was to lead only to a logical draw. Anish Giri could not spot a win and had to settle for a draw with veteran Simen Agdestein who is the talk of the tournament being both Carlsen's former chess teacher and having made a huge comeback to international chess in the recent past. Agdestein is one of those few double-talents who has also represented Norway internationally in football.

Fabiano Caruana might have been actually been surprised when he beat Peter Svidler's Sicilian. The game was a sharp one and both players went for well-known lines that were obvious home prep for at least move 11. However, Svidler picked up a pawn and then got into a complicated position where his 'computer' memory failed him and he was forced to give up his Queen for a Bishop and a Rook. It was downhill after that despite his valiant effort.

World No. 2 Levon Aronian who has already declared that he would be rooting for Simen Agdestein after the latter's draw with him in the first round, went all guns blazing against the Russian Sergey Karjakin. Aronian had a clever strategy, all the will and no loosening of the leash as in the previous round. Aronian was patient, held on to his slight opening advantage, maneuvered his Knight to go into a Rook endgame that could have still secured a draw for the defending champion. However, Karjakin erred and Aronian took a full point on a won endgame for White.

The one other game, Veselin Topalov – Alexander Grischuk had the Russian on edge as he had lost the first round to Caruana in time trouble. In Round 2, it was Topalov's blunder in time trouble that gave Grischuk the full point.

You can find a great detailed report on Round 2 at the official website where the daily chess action is live every day.

Not only did World Chess Champion Magnus Carlsen escape with a draw from the clutches of Fabiano Caruana in a totally lost game, but Sergey Karjakin pulled off a similar feat as well from the clutches of Simen Agdestein.

The Russians, however, had plenty to cheer about. Top Russian Grandmaster Alexander Grischuk ground out World No. 2 Levon Aronian after the latter's blunder and former World Chess Champion Vladimir Kramnik forced Dutchman Anish Giri to blunder in a difficult position.

Meanwhile, Peter Svidler and Veselin Topalov played a calm game to reach a draw.
